THE JOY OF "THANKS"

Succulent roast turkey

Number 1 Thigh Enemy...worth 2 slices, every time!
Perfumed stuffing
( or was that "dressing?")

Molasses sweet potatoes

Pan-fried Brussels sprouts with pistachio

Creamiest mashed potato

Homemade cranberry sauce with a zing of orange zest...

Did I mention..
Water-baked cheesecake,
Bread, NO, Croissant and Butter Pudding.
Not to forget, my thighs' biggest enemy...Pecan Pie.

All washed down with lots of fabulous, big, Bordeaux reds.

I have been truly honoured to have been invited, again, for Thanksgiving with American friends.

My fourth Thanksgiving, I have now learnt to "prepare" myself.....avoid all food in the 24 hour countdown to Thanksgiving supper. The tried and applied DesperateAngloHousewife formula in order to be able to eat everything...TWICE! This is an eating marathon.

But more important than the food is the sharing, loving and extreme generosity that people put into this. At a time when we are all suffering from a global crisis there is a huge lesson to be learnt from such festivities - it's not about spending money, impressing your entourage with complex cuisine but simply about all chipping in and sharing with others. The very simplicity of last evening's supper was its essence.

Thank you again and again and again for allowing me to be part of this.

ps I am doing abdos as I write this in preparation for next year!!

Pecan Pie
This is my mother's recipe from the 1950's,
she brought it back from the USA after experiencing Thanksgiving.

1 pastry shell, frozen or chilled for an hour if freshly made.
1 1/2 cups pecans, coarsely chopped
2 eggs, slightly beaten
2 cups compact brown sugar
1 tablespoon molasses
2 tablespoon melted butter
2 tablespoon flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla essence

Preheat oven to 375°F.
Spread pecans along the bottom of the pie shell.
Mix the remaining ingredients and pour over pecans. (No need for an electric mixer, you can mix by hand.) The pecans will rise to the surface of the pie.
Bake at 375°F for 40-45 minutes until the filling has set.
Remove from oven and let cool completely.
Serves 8
