A ROYAL WEDDING

Why we love them...

What is it about a royal wedding which interests even the most cynical of us?

Kiwi, republican by nature ( not in the US political sense!), hugely cynical, feminist...I can hardly wait to see Kate's dress today and William in his millitary reds.

Instead of going into work I am one of many expats gathering with their friends and "fairy cakes" to watch the big event.

William and Kate's story is a break away from tradition, the smashing of the mould -  it's the union of a royal to a commoner. It would appear that the royals have finally understood that love today cannot be tailor-made. Today, for the royal family to maintain its credibility, or that which remains, it has adapted its cocooned infrastructure to the real world. Whereas Charles and Diana were a fairytale, untouchable, William and Kate are a real couple.

It saddened me to hear a french psycologist "analysing" the danger of this union. She spoke about "princess complex," the dangers of dreaming, little boys turning into modern-day Narcissus with "prince complex"... honestly, a load of dribble. We do need something " soft" in this world and William and Kate's story allows us to dream and admire. What is wrong with dreaming, using our imaginations..isn't that the basis for all art, literature, music? A part of our cultural foundation?

So what is it?
I believe that in this world packed with violence and cruelty, a royal wedding gives us a moment of reprise from the harsh realities of our daily trudge. It is also romantic, enormously romantic.
The story of love is something which touches everybody. Even this crusty, cynical 40-something will be wearing waterproof mascara today..

  1. I so agree with you. William and Kates wedding is a chance for the royal family to regain their popularity and be part of the modern world.
